CCEE 1901 - Black Ice Technique

Our January CCEE Hostess, Liz Williams, has the CCEE Stampers starting off with an icy challenge for the New Year. The technique is called Black Ice, and I followed the well- written and photographed tutorial at Splitcoaststampers found HERE.

Although this is a very simple technique, I had lots of trouble getting it to work. My main issue was the age and dry condition of the three StaZon inks I own. The white was dry as a bone. The black and brown were damp but not enough to do any streaking across the foil paper. Finally this morning, I was able to track down a reinker in my stash for the black pad. But somehow, I then inked the black StaZon in Memento Pistachio die ink! WHAT?? In the trash it went. My next attempt had me reinking the brown StaZon pad with black ink. You see the results below.

It looks better than the photo, but not enough that I will be doing the technique often.

The image is Wishes and Dreams by Unity. I stamped it on a pale blue foil paper.

Everybody else did a better job than me!!

  1. Lynn, I can see a bird and sentiment on your lovely black ice panel. Sometimes our mistakes make our project look better! Have a wonderful day, Lynn! Hugs

  2. Thanks, for persevering on this task. It seemed wintery for the challenge for January, but I too will not be repeating this technique either. Glad we live in the part of the world where winter does not get icy very often.

  3. I actually think the bird image looks abstract and artsy on your design Lynn! This is a new to be technique and looks so fun to try out!! Oh no about the ink incident too!! I think my Staz On is a very old one, but I haven't used it in a while and probably needs reinking too which I will keep in mind which bottle I grab!! LOL!! Best wishes for a very happy, healthy and crafty New Year in 2019 my friend! HUGS

  7. I've never attempted this technique and maybe because my ink pads would be dry too. Glad you hung in there with doing it though and it came out great!

  8. We are always so hard on our selves. I don't think it looks as bad as you think. I like it alot. Maybe it's the frustration of all the ink issues you were having...lol I hate those kind of days but you have to laugh at our mishaps, thats what keeps us sane heeheehee.

  12. This DOES LOOK LIKE "Black Ice," Lynn!!! My Stazon Ink goes dry too.... :( It is so hard to keep them moist & ready to use all the time, isn't it? I think you did a FABULOUS JOB on this!!! INKY HUGS for your SWEET VISITS! ;)

  13. Very cool technique.. I've never heard of it before.... I've had several Stazon pads dry up and now only keep the black. Even though you had a bit of trouble it does look like black ice.
