Marching Band Music Can

Pop-top gift packaging has been around for years, but it continues to be one of my favorites because it never fails to delight young and old alike!! I have a teenager's birthday fast approaching so I created this "Cover Up" for my gift of music!

To prepare the can, I used a safety can opener to carefully remove the bottom of a fruit can. I washed it with hot, soapy water and allowed it to dry as I worked on the Cover Up.

Digital images are ideal for this type of project because you can arrange them and size them exactly like you want them! Because I am enclosing an iTunes gift card in the can, I have chosen these adorable furry musicians from Marching Band 1 and Marching Band 2 from Angels Landing. After carefully measuring my can, I resized the animals to 2.5 inches in height and added a line of musical notes to the top and bottom of the band of Georgia Pacific white cardstock. I also added the sentiment "May your birthday be filled with joyful melodies" in the center of the band. Both the notes and the sentiment are a part of the Marching Band 1 set.

Along with the musical notes, 4 animals and the sentiment were a perfect fit to completely encircle the can!

The animals were colored with Prismacolor pencils and odorless mineral spirits. If you click on the pictures to see them close up, you will see that I also added a bit of sparkle to the musical notes with my black Spica Atyou pen.

Both the paper band and the striped ribbon at the top were attached to the can with Scop-Tape. I created the organdy bow using red and blue ribbon and attached it to cover the seam in the back. I added the rhinestone brad and random red rhinestones to increase the blink.

To complete the gift, I filled the can with Skittles and inserted the iTunes gift card. I then used Crystal Effects to glue the bottom back onto the can.
